Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962), one of the renowned writers of modern Turkish literature, is increasingly recognized for his value as an artist, and the number of studies on his life and works continues to grow. There is always a connection between an artist's life, character, and the themes in their literary works. It is inconceivable that an artist's literary texts would not reflect any events from his life. However, this reflection is not in the form of a direct retelling of events. Opinions about life and people that take root in their minds are retold in literary works through different expressions or fictions. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar is one of our writers who recounts certain events he experienced in his works in a modified form. In this respect, Tanpınar resembles writers who use the experiences of romantic literature as a theme in their works. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar was not only an artist but also an academic. His academic career began in 1939 when he was appointed professor to the Tanzimat Chair established within the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Istanbul University's Faculty of Literature. Tanpınar took a break from academia between 1943 and 1946 when he served as a member of parliament for Maraş. After his term as a member of parliament ended, he returned to his position at the university. In the period after 1950, Tanpınar's writing career included a novel, a book of short stories, and several articles. We know from his diaries that he struggled with writing during this period and complained about academic work, human relations at the faculty, and the political situation in the country. This article, which focuses on two events that caused Tanpınar to complain about academic life, is based entirely on documents. The first incident illustrating how Tanpınar, as an administrator, was affected by the problems that could arise among faculty members in any government office or academy began in March 1953 and continued for years. The second incident concerned not only Tanpınar but also his close circle in the academy. The newspaper reports claiming that Tanpınar was a communist and the investigations conducted because of these reports certainly disturbed Tanpınar. The years in which Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar experienced these events were precisely the years in which he wrote his novel Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü (The Institute of Time Adjustment). Therefore, while writing The Institute of Time Adjustment, he was probably influenced by the events mentioned below that he experienced at the university. This article was prepared with the idea that it would contribute to Tanpınar's biography and to the understanding of his character and works.
