In his work The Anxiety of Influence, Harold Bloom describes how a young poet is influenced by the master poets before him, but then struggles to find his own personality. This is the process of the young poet coming face to face with the master poet and gradually finding his personality. Bloom says that this process consist of six revisionist phases. In Turkish literature, it is known that Sezai Karakoç was influenced by Necip Fazıl’s thoughts and poetry through Büyük Doğu magazine since his middle school and high school ages, and that he even worked in Büyük Doğu during his university years and published some of his articles and poems in this magazine. However, after a short time, Karakoç, like most poets, breaks away from the influence of this master and begins the process of constructing his own poetry. The poet’s “Memories”, first published serially in Diriliş magzine between July 27, 1988 and February 5, 1992, contains important information in termz of following both his relations with his master Necip Fazıl and the procress of finding his own personality in poetry. In this article, the realitionship between Necip Fazıl and Sezai Karakoç and the process of Karakoç constructing his own poetry are examined based on the stages identified by Bloom in The Anxiety of Influence.
