Benim Adım Kırmızı (literally My Name is Red) is the book in which Orhan Pamuk discusses, by narrating three different events linking to each other in some way, how a Muslim artist comprehendsa nd depicts the universe,h uman being and the nature within thef rameworko f the contradictionb etweent he painting and miniature According to the narratorsi n the novel, the significanto r characteristicth ing in this processo f cognition and expressing·i s the matter of what is real and valuablea nd also how much and to what extent a human being occupies a place in the universe. To those narrators, the greatest and the basic difference between the works of the Eastern painters (muralists) and the Western artists is the point of view. The matter of whether a Muslim artist (specially the muralist) has a particular manner, attitude, voice or style of his own appears to be another main theme of the novel. ln this paper, it will be discussed that how the artistic debates and the comparison between the East and the West by considering the two basic subjects mentioned in Benim Adım Kırmızı play a role in the setting of the plot and also their referencest o the issue of Westernization.
