AN ANALYSIS OF BODY AND PERSONALITY RELATIONSHIP IN TANZİMAT ERA NOVEL
In this study, the first novels in Turkish literature are paid attention in terms of body and identity relations. Writers in these novels get connections with the bodily properties and identity and describe the bad characters (like Abdullah Efendi in Intibah, esirci Haci Ömer in Sergüzeşt) as disgusting. But the women (like Mehpeyker in Intibah, Perişev in Araba Sevdası) whose function is to lead astray are seen as both beautiful and evil. Those who have good temperament and are merciful (like Dilaşup and Felatun Bey in Intibah, Canan in Rakım Efendi, Dilber in Sergüzeşt) are always seen as beautiful with a halo on their face and with innocence in their behavior. At least there exist no descriptions that they are shameful. The gentlemen good at mocking and have inherited a fortune (like Felatun bey in Rakım Efendi, Bihruz Bey in Araba Sevdası) are foremost in a ridiculous manner of dressing and attract attention in terms of lack of body hormony. What descriptions showing positive and negative outlook look like the same in different novels explains that the intellectual perceive the re- lations between body and identity similarly. In this regard, a study broad in scope on cultural origins of body and identity connections made by the Tanzimat (administrative reform) era novelist leads to important ends.
