THE SECRET OF SPEECH: METAPHORICAL DISCOURSE IN NECİP FAZIL'S POETRY

Necip Fazıl’s identity as a poet is built upon two dimensions of his words. The first is the dimension of meaning and wisdom, which has been extensively studied and elucidated in numerous works. However, the stylistic power that truly grants Necip Fazıl his poetic strength has largely remained overshadowed by his reputation as a thinker. This study focuses on the linguistic dimension of his poetry—the element that distinguishes his words from hundreds, perhaps thousands, of other verses—and concludes that metaphor is the fundamental constructive force behind Necip Fazıl’s language, or in other words, the "secret of his words." In this context, Contemporary Metaphor Theory, proposed by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson, which presents the most recent and robust theoretical framework on metaphor, has been adopted as the primary reference for analyzing the metaphorical residue in Necip Fazıl’s poetry. The study begins with a brief literature review and theoretical foundation on metaphor, as it forms the methodological basis of the research. Subsequently, the metaphorical residue extracted from Necip Fazıl’s poetry is classified within the framework of Contemporary Metaphor Theory, aiming to establish a coherent interpretation within the semantic universe of the Turkish language and Necip Fazıl’s poetic world. During the process of identifying metaphorical residues, it became evident that Necip Fazıl’s poetry is almost under an "invasion of metaphors." Nearly every line carries traces of metaphor in its depth of meaning. His intense focus on metaphysical truths, his social consciousness, along with the inherently metaphorical nature of language and thought, can be considered among the reasons for this density of metaphors in his work.
