INNOVATIVE GENRES IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: TRENDS AND TRANSFORMATIONS IN CONTEMPORARY ILLUSTRATED BOOKS

Illustrated children's books are among the most important educational tools for children. To date, there have been various illustrated books in terms of number and type. The aim of this study is to classify illustrated children's books used in early childhood in terms of type and content, to reveal how they have changed to date, and to highlight their contributions in the context of early childhood education. In line with this objective, a compilation study was conducted. In this context, illustrated children's book types are categorized as educational books, books inspired by technological developments, books inspired by social changes, and other book types. Educational books are classified as baby books, concept books, alphabet books, counting books, pattern books, easy-to-read books, informative books, science books, and STEAM-themed books. Books that have emerged as a result of technological development are classified as hybrid books, interactive books, animated books, electronic books, and picture book applications. Books inspired by social changes are classified as books that address difficult topics and are multicultural and multilingual. Finally, silent books and music-based books are discussed. The study presents the classification and content characteristics of contemporary picture books. Based on this compilation, the study reveals the changes in children's picture books over the years and draws conclusions about the trends that may emerge in children's literature in the coming years. In this regard, the study is expected to serve as a guide for literature and practice.
