DAYS THAT STORIES ON THE BORDER OF FICTION AND REALITY IN TOMRIS UYAR’S DIARIES

Diaries offer a panorama of the period in which they were written, while recounting the author’s inner world. Diaries are also used as a narrative technique in genres such as short stories and novels. Many important novels in Turkish and world literature have been written in the form of diaries. Various studies have been conducted addressing the aforementioned characteristics of diaries. The aim of this article is to explore the techniques specific to fictional narratives in diaries and to illustrate the authors’ ability to narrate daily life. Tomris Uyar’s storytelling identity and the richness of her diaries in terms of narrative and content are the primary reasons for selecting her diaries for this article. The analyses were conducted with a text-centered approach, focusing on the fundamental concepts of narratology, and drawing on the insights of prominent researchers in Turkish and world literature. The article concludes that Tomris Uyar’s talent for storytelling is profoundly reflected in her diaries, and that she extensively utilizes techniques specific to fictional narratives, such as “reminiscence,” “moment of enlightenment,” “surprise,” “irony,” “causality,” “difference of perspective,” and “contrast.”
