UTOPİA AND SCİENCE FİCTİON İN ISLAMİST IDEOLOGY: AN ANALYSİS OF ALİ NAR’S THE LAND OF BEES AND SPACE FARMERS NOVELS

This study aims to examine how utopian and science fiction genres in Turkish literature are shaped within the context of Islamist ideology, focusing on Ali Nar’s novels Arılar Ülkesi (The Land of Bees, 1980) and Uzay Çiftçileri (Space Farmers, 1988). It investigates how the Islamist perspective is reflected in the narrative and how socio-cultural critique is constructed in these relatively scarce genres within Turkish literature. The study addresses three main questions: 1. How does Ali Nar utilize the utopian and science fiction genres in Arılar Ülkesi and Uzay Çiftçileri to express Islamist ideology? 2. How are the themes of modernization and tradition treated in these novels, and how are they linked to Islamist ideology? 3. Where do these works stand within the broader context of utopian and science fiction literature in Turkish literature? Through textual analysis and close reading techniques, both novels were examined, identifying thematic motifs, allegorical structures, and ideological references. Arılar Ülkesi depicts an ideal Islamic society through the hierarchical order of a bee colony, while Uzay Çiftçileri presents a vision of universal jihad through space exploration. Both novels adopt a critical stance toward modernization (e.g., the alphabet reform [the 1928 transition from Arabic to Latin script], village institutes [rural teacher training schools established in the 1940s]) and secular paradigms, characterized by a didactic tone and a rigid ideological perspective, which at times limits their literary depth. The study elucidates the representation of Islamist ideology through utopian and science fiction frameworks and highlights the contributions of these novels to the ideological diversity of these genres.
