PHENOMENA OF SOUND: HICCUPS AND LAUGHTER IN THE NOVEL KİRALIK KONAK

Sound is an important phenomenon that initiates one's subjectification in the field of existence by striking the Other. The process of subjectivisation starts with the sound creating an effect on the Other. Thus, the entry into the social structure is realised by being included in language and thus in the field of meaning. In non-voice, on the other hand, there is no complete inclusion in the field of meaning. Mladen Dolar, on the way to the object voice, after accent, intonation and timbre, which are the qualities related to the voice in speech, named the non-speech manifestations of the voice as non-voice. These sounds are not controllable sounds. However, non-sounds such as cough, hiccup, laughter are not completely out of the structure. This article focuses on hiccups and laughter, which are the phenomena of the non-sense, based on Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu's novel Kiralık Konak. In the novel Kiralık Konak, which depicts the first quarter of the twentieth century when westernisation efforts accelerated in the Ottoman Empire, the issue of traditional life and westernisation, which constitute the foci of meaning in the period, can be followed through hiccups and laughter. Naim Efendi, one of the main characters in the novel, represents hiccups and his granddaughter Seniha represents laughter. In this article, the changing world of meaning of the era around Naim Efendi and Seniha is evaluated through the phenomena of the imperceptible and the soundless.
