RETHINKING HISTORY IN FICTION: İSİMLE ATEŞ ARASINDA IN THE CONTEXT OF NEW HISTORICISM

When literature and history come side by side, they often bring about a sharp distinction. According to the common perception, literature is based on fiction and history is based on reality; therefore, in this equation, the artist/author is paired with subjectivity and the historian is paired with objectivity. However, since the 1980s, some critics, led by Stephen Greenblatt, have argued that the distance between literature and history is not as far as thought, and that there are even various intimacies between these two genres. As a result of these arguments, a theory called New Historicism was born. According to this theory, history and power have been in close contact for centuries, and because of this contact, it is impossible for historians to be completely objective. In this case, the scientificness claim of history naturally becomes suspicious. What is in vogue now is its textuality and fictionality. All these discussions spread to literary texts over time. Nazan Bekiroğlu’s novel İsimle Ateş Arasında stands out among its contemporaries in this sense. The novel does not attempt to establish its plot directly under the guidance of information from official history; instead - similar to the theory of New Historicism - it suggests approaching given information with skepticism. It invites the reader to rethink history through a fictional window, reminding the close friendship of history with power, the inevitable subjectivity of the historian, and the fictionality inherent in history. Based on this, an interdisciplinary attitude has been adopted in this study and it is aimed to shed light on the various relations between literature and history through the mentioned novel.
