Terakki-i Muhadderât and Hanımlara Mahsus Gazete present a model based on the image of the European woman, but some religious, cultural or cyclical concerns cause hesitations about the boundaries of the model in question. On the other hand, detailed descriptions of how a Muslim Ottoman woman should be are drawn through comparisons in both magazines.In this article, ‘critical emphasises’, ‘glorifying comments’ and ‘offensive practices’ relating to European and American women in Terakki-i Muhadderât and Hanımlara Mahsus Gazete from women’s magazines of pre-Constitutional Era will be examined through the discourses in the texts selected as the reference. In the article, it will be defended the thesis in which ideological, economic, cultural and religious reasons are effective for comparisons made about west in these two journals. In addition, it will be argued that many of the authors who claim to be behind Europe and America in the fields of economics and education and who emphasize the discourse of civilization are in alliance.
