THE LEVELS OF IMAGERY OF EXISTENTIALISM IN THE STORIES BY OSMAN NECMİ GÜRMEN
Existentialism, as a philosophical movement, began to gain strength towards the midst of the 20th century and thus, it can be clearly observed on the literary texts, through which emotions and thought can be conveyed within aesthetical measures. In this sense, one of the authors who gravitates to the Existentialist philosophy in their Works with ontological concerns is Osman Necmi Gürmen. Witnessing the powerful period of existentialism, Osman Necmi Gürmen ( b. 1927 - d. 2015 ) was impressed by this philosophical movement, due to his own experience. Especially, he places the characters in his stories in the centre of the text as the persons who have been through existential processes and who have conflicts against themselves and the society. These characters, who refuse to be puppets of the order they are in, choose to be the outsiders and exhibit their awareness of responsibility that take form in the liberty of their existential choices through their process of “becoming an individual”. The persons in the story, who desire to realise their own selves, become alienated in the predicaments of life while they feel surrounded by the society. They transform into characters who feel their identity as a necessity of freedom and who perceive alienation as the revolt against the existent and who choose to act accordingly. The relation of the science of literature with sociology and philosophy makes it necessary for the literary text to be examined through interdisciplinary methods. In this study, the stories by Osman Necmi Gürmen were examined specifically within the aspects of alienation and liberation through this interdisciplinary method.
