FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE AND IMAGE IN THE POEM “AMERICA” BY NECAT ÇAVUŞ
Necat Çavuş (1959-), one of the important names of contemporary Turkish poetry, began his poetic career in the 1980’s. “America”, which is the poet’s book, composed in one poem form, in 35 chapters, was published in 2003. The poem, a reference to Allen Ginsberg’s “America” as well, is important as an aesthetic reaction to military interventions of USA in Iraq. Çavuş, besides the other poetic devices, uses the figures effectively. The speaker in the poem portrays himself also while trying to shape an image of America. The speaker of the poem evaluates the binary oppositions such as West versus East, male versus female, nature versus civilization, us versus them through his dialectic with America. In this respect he is a mature and a wise poet while America is an adolecent femme fatale. Finally the poem goes beyond being a protest and turns into an invitation of “return to the origin” to America.
