EPIC TRADITION AND NAZIM HIKMET’S KUVÂYİ MİLLİYE EPIC POEM
Epics are heroic stories fictionalized by societies’ collective subconscious. The society which gathered around common emotions, thoughts, and accumulations creates the epic stories on heroic efforts which mostly ends up with success. Epics written in order to praise governers are transformed over time. Epic traditions which transfered to collective memory by means of their effective usage in oral tradition, are being written by modern poets, as well. Nazım Hikmet’s Kuvâyi Milliye epic may be associated with epic tradition, which has its own rhetorical, formal, and contextual tradition. In Kuvayi Milliye, which has “epic” subtitile, it is observed that Nazım Hikmet is tranformed and recreated epic tradition within its own context. In this paper, Kuvayi Milliye ill be discussed in context of epic tradition by its form, context and rhetoric, and especially indicative characteristics of poem’s and epic’s main characters will be compared, and similarities and differences between poem and epic will be disscussed.
