ISLAM AND TURKISH NATIONALISM WHICH HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED AS “OTHER” IN ORHAN PAMUK’S NOVELS
2006 Nobel Literature laureate Orhan Pamuk’s novels have been translated into many languages and his books find “elite” readers around the World. In the Western world, Orhan Pamuk’s novels are being read as “representative of the Turkish culture.” However, exactly how do his novels express the meaning of being Turkish and so called Turkish Islam? Orhan Pamuk’s novels’ main subjects are orientated towards matters of east and west; within this sphere, how does Orhan Pamuk portray Turkish culture and Islam? Is he exercising due tolerance for the subjects in question (Turkish culture and Islam) or introducing them as “other”? This paper intends to find substantial answers to those questions being asked.
