THE SYMBOL OF THE COSMIC TREE IN YASAR KEMAL'S NOVEL WHICH IS NAMED THE WIND FROM THE PLAIN: HOLY WALNUT TREE
Making the stories and experiences of ancient peoples accessible to us, seen as the symbolic language of the collective unconscious, and serving as sources of inspiration for many fields of human endeavor, myths are important resources drawn upon by modern narratives. Ancient humans employed the symbolic language of myths to defeat mysterious creatures and to organize their social lives. Cosmogonic or creation myths are symbolic narratives of the beginning of the world. That all creation has a single center is the central tenet of cosmogonic symbolism. There are three cosmic spaces in which the events of creation took place. Connecting these three cosmic spaces and incorporated in rituals and narratives, the symbols such as the cosmic pillar, the cosmic tree or tent are the essential elements of the cosmogenic symbolism. In his novel The Wind from the Plain, Yaşar Kemal employs the symbol of the cosmic tree, an important element of the cosmogenic symbolism, to present the destiny, life struggles, hopes, hopelessness of human beings and their need to believe. This paper aims to identify the characteristics of the cosmic tree found in ancient mythologies, and reveal the narrative function of the Holy Walnut Tree enriched with the symbol of light.
