LAUGHTER PHENOMENON AND EXPLAINING THE MEANING OF COMIC IN HUSEYIN RAHMI GURPINAR’S STORIES
Huseyin Rahmi Gurpinar, who bases his literary style on the idea of “literature for public”, moves his pen to determine, criticize and satirize the flaws in society. This orientation, which holds an aim of informing and educating people, actually has a background consisting radical turns and gets its power from his positivist world view. Especially in some stories Gurpinar had written between 1908-1939, underneath his using authentic power of humour, irony and wit, there lies the tendency of transforming positivist realities, which he wants to transfer, within fiction and drawing his readers to “a higher philosophy”. At this point, the laughter phenomenon he applies provides author the opportunity to warn about settled fallacies and individual or collective flaws, and explain the meaning of comic. Our study has aims of handling the theoretical framework that French philosopher Henri Bergson has based comic and the meaning of comic on in his work Laughter (Le Rire) with dimensions have reflected on Gurpinar’s stories, and interpreting the phenomenon of laughter on sociological and psychological axes on the basis of comic elements in stories. In that sense, elements like situation comedy, language comedy and character comedy that establish the main dynamics of Laughter will be starting points of our study.
