MONGOLS, SELJUKS AND OTTOMANS İN DURALİ YILMAZ’S HİSTORİCAL-BİOGRAPHİCAL NOVELS
Whether literature is science or not is discussed for a very long time. As those who claim that the literature is not science tell literature is fiction but science deals with facts and things that can be repeated. From this viewpoint, the claimers appear to be correct. Others claim that literature is science. They use literary history, literary criticism and sociology of literature which they see as a branch of literature to prove their claim. The discussions about the literature and its relationship with reality are also maintained individually in relation to literature genres. There has been wide spread debate over to what extent historical novels will based on historical truths or even whether they should be. Even the very notion of “what” is/is not history is also discussed. Some thinkers on history question the approach of historical documents. This approach claims that the things we take for granted as “history” are, in fact, nothing but the historians’ “interpretations” and historical text-document writers are not very different from novelists as to they do. From this point there is no any difference of novelists and historians. Therefore, whatever novelists write regarding history also becomes important since novelists also try to “write a history” or “change the notion of history” through their interpretations. In this paper, we will try to present Durali Yılmaz’s interpretation of Seljuk, Mongol, and Ottoman authorities in the period that has been the topic of historical-biographical novels. Thus, we will determine Durali Yılmaz’s notion of history within the framework of the view claiming that what historians and novelists do is the same and history is nothing but interpretations.
